Our philosophy is rooted in excellence. We'd rather be known for creating small amounts of extremely fine wine than making a lot of wine. Our idea of fine wine is one that will open up fairly quickly but continue to improve with aeration. A wine that gives a good shot of fruit up front without being jammy. A wine that exhibits the essence of the grape varietal as well as terroir of the region it is grown in. Further, it must have great balance of the key wine components, fruit, tannins, acid, and alcohol. We strive to produce a wine complex in nature so that every taste has several nuances of aromas and flavors. It must have a long and satisfying finish so that you want to savor each sip for a long time while you linger over food and conversation with friends, family, and business colleagues. Additionally, the wine must have the attributes that allow it to cellar for several years and improve in quality. This is our philosophy and we will do everything possible to deliver this to you.
2008 Merlot
This vintage is again a great example of wonderful fruit from the Lake Cynthia Vineyard, deep in the heart of Napa in the Oak Knoll District. It is a bit different than our 2007 and perhaps is more of a showcase for the great attributes of the Merlot grape. We pretty much think that the 2008 Merlot is more of a Merlot lovers Merlot, whereas the 2007 Merlot was more of a Cabernet-lover's Merlot. The succulence of the wonderful black cherry flavors that have made Merlot so popular come through. The "secret ingredient" that sets it apart is a blend of 3% Malbec, which gives it wonderful color and an instant shot of fruit. That great Merlot varietal flavor carries through to an incredibly satisfying finish.
2008 Cabernet Sauvignon
Game Farm Vineyard is the source of these Cabernet grapes and it gives us a great additional twist. The vineyard is located near the valley floor in the Oakville District, the source of some of the greatest Cabernet grapes in the world. However, the additional twist is that it was planted in the backdrop of a dam near the Silverado Trail and the rocky soil from that project. The result is a topsoil that has as much in common with a rocky hillside vineyard with the richness of valley floor grapes. To complete the "portrait," we broadened the depth of flavors and finishes that make Napa Valley Cabernets the absolute best. We sought to expand the layers of flavor – with a "winning" additional blend of 5% Merlot, 4% Malbec, and 2% Petite Verdot. The incredible result is a bold, structured Cabernet softened by the Merlot with all kinds of complexity and mid-palate smoothness from the Petite Verdot and great color and fresh fruit from the Malbec. We love it. And we hope it has a "Wow Factor" for you as well.
2007 Merlot
The 2007 Merlot fruit was sourced from the Lake Cynthia vineyard in the Oak knoll district. This was an excellent year for Merlot. Incredibly rich, this Merlot captures the best attributes of this wonderful grape. It has rich cherry and vanilla flavors, but also has a complexity of several layers with a solid finish. This complex wine was created by blending in 5% Cabernet Sauvignon to give it structure and 3% Malbec to give it a finishing touch.
